Is $2900 too much for a 1995 Ducati Monster 900?

Hello,

Ducati Monster is my dream bike and I'm finally in reach of getting one. $2900 and its in good condition but it has 20k miles on. Also its a 1995. I am mechanically inclined and I've read that the '95 Monsters are easier to do adjustments and maintenance compared to later models so I figured that's a plus. Seller says clutch has been replaced (Hmmm... I wonder why...) carbs cleaned, tires should last a solid full season, brakes have plenty of life left, hes doing a oil change and fuel filter change on it now. He doesn't know if the valve or belts have been changed/adjusted. So I won't be bummed about doing some mechanical work but I do feel like $2900 for a '95 Ducati Monster with 20k is worth that price. I plan on asking to lower it down just because of the valves needing to be done and the high mileage, maybe for $2500 maybe $2250... What do you think?

$2900 is far too much for that bike. It is an 16 year old motorcycle from a manufacturer known for its lack of reliability and ridiculously short service intervals. I would pay no more than 1500 for it, maybe 1800 if it is in PERFECT condition. Make sure you have atleast a $1k reserve for maintenance and parts per season.

done and the high mileage??? 20K miles..

if your asking here.... this is not a learner bike.. 900 Ducati is a handful for a rider that has an idea what there doing.. grab a hand full of throttle & the front wheel will rise skywards.. then you panic shut off.. grab a handful of front brake because the bike is doing 60 MPH in first gear.. then the rear wheel lifts off the road & you slide to a stop on your side with the bike on top of you...

all this will happen in about 3 seconds..

My ducati has 30K on it & is running fine..clutch replacement could be because the person that had it before you also had no idea.. they run a wet clutch.. often an oil change will fix a slipping clutch..

tires... how old??... you don't want tread depth.. you need grip???

valve adjustments..belt change..The 12k/2 year service should include belts AND valve clearances.

belts can be changed easily.. & are cheaper than rebuilding the valve train.. but clearances on the valves is shim & bucket.. so not an easy fix at home...
