is 27 years old too old to join the army?

I want to join the army, but is 27 years old too old to join, since the pay is only like 1339 before taxes to start? How fast do you tend to gain rank in the army? Is it really worth the pay? I know you get added benefits, such as free room and board and food, health care etc.
how much is usually taken out for taxes for a single women in the army
