Is 1 year wait after pre-marital sex for LDS temple marriage a myth?

Is this a myth? Isn't it up to you bishop and stake president to have the final word? I keep hearing people say if you have sex before marriage then you have to wait a year to get married in the temple.

In my case I did have sex before marriage a few times with my fiancee. We were thinking we were going to have to wait a year after confessing. But the bishop and stake president talked and prayed about it and we were sealed the same day we had planned to be.

I think we should be telling those who have transgressed to simply confess to the bishop. Not everyone will have to wait a year to get married in the temple necessarily. Its a case by case it seems.

I also knew a good friend who had sex a few times before his mission. He confessed, repented with the help of priesthood authority- he went on a mission. He was in a different stake entirely. Once again it was up to the bishop and stake president.
Now I do not think we should encourage sex before marriage. It was not until marriage that I realized the wisdom of no sex before marriage. It is so scared, special and it needs the marriage commitment along with it. If I could go back- I would have not had pre-marital sex. But humans make mistakes, even ones regarding sexual sins. Sexual sins can be forgiven with proper repentance. And proper repentance does not necessarily mean wait a certain amount of time.
