i have an ipod touch 32gb 3rd gen 3.1.3 tethered. i am looking for help on the best method to jailbreak this without losing the jailbreak whenever i power the ipod off and have to boot it up with my computer.

1. should i update the firmware to the most current 4.1 and then jailbreak with the newest blackra1n or limera1n?

2. should i leave the older firmware and jailbreak it the way it is?

i have jailbroken the original 1st gen iphones in the past and recently i jailbroke a new 16gb iphone 3gs with 4.1. the problem is this is the first ipod i came across that is "tethered" which i found out with the program f0rcast. now i searched and read many tutorials and guides online and understand (somewhat) about jailbreaking i just do not fully understand if there is a way to ether untether this ipod or jailbreak it. i will update if that is all i need to do but i figured i would ask because i can always upgrade and not sure how easy it is to downgrade and i want to avoid any un-needed work. i appreciate any feedback and i will choose the best answer when one is left. thanks in advance.
not sure if i already asked but since this is "tethered" is it like that no matter what firmware i have or is there a way to change it?
i have winrar already installed. thanks for the web page but i have already come across that i still am not sure if you understand what my ? is. should i upgrade to 4.1 or no? i have read that it will change your baseband and that its harder or possibly harder to jailbreak that way. so i just want to have my phone jailbroken without having to boot off the computer say my battery dies or i re-boot. is this possible with the newest firmware update or am i stuck with a tethered ipod that i just have to settle for a jailbreak me website hack and have to reboot with my computer if i power down?
