ipod nano 4th gen has no sound, can this be fixed without sending to apple or...

...will I need to get a new iPod? I won a 4th Gen iPod nano in 2008. It was brand new and I paid absolutely nothing for it. I didn't even think about getting insurance or anything on it. Now, two years later, no sound will come through my headphones. I was using my mom's mp3 player's headphones at the time, since the original headphones that came with the iPod were destroyed. When they stopped working I bought a pair of brand new, default ipod headphones for cheap on ebay (direct from factory in china) and now they no longer work either. What happened? I do not have the money to pay for Apple to make repairs to the ipod, so is there a way to fix it or do I need to look for a new one?
Thanks to Kyla who was my first answerer, however I am trying to find out if there is a way that I personally can fix the iPod WITHOUT sending it to Apple. . . don't have insurance on it or finances to pay for repairs.
