iPhone Question?

Is the interent on the iPhone through Wi-Fi, or through AT&T?
(Do I need something else to connect, or do I connect through AT&T like I would if I use the internet on a regular cell phone?)

it runs on both EDGE and wifi.the wifi is in like a starbucks.on the new iphone that will be coming soon ther will be 3g wich is even faster than EDGE
