iphone Frozen part way through iOS5 installation

Hello!! Please Help!
I have just tried to install iOS5 which failed half way through - my phone is now completely frozen.
I got an error message which was something like 16 .... something (sorry didnt pay much attention at the time.
How do I switch the thing off. Can I remove the battery or do I have to wait for it to run down?

I am a complete techo-numpty .... can you tell?

Before you go threw all that extra stuff try doind a hard reset. Hold down the home and sleep buttons untill you see an apple logo and then let go.

and if that fails, try and put your iDevice in DFU mode
