Iphone contract cancellation?

I have the iphone 3gs and want to cancel the contract. I only have it for like 4 months but dont like to lock in a contract for 2 years so I want to cancel it and keep the phone. Do you have to sent back the phone to ATT? or do you get to keep the phone? Is there any extra fee you have to pay or you just pay the early termination fee?
