So much for the iPhone 6 release date arriving in the fall. It’s the first week of summer and Walmart is already fire-saling the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S for $129 and $39 respectively, looking to blow out its remaining inventory of both as fast it can, short of giving them away for free. The move comes as a shocker: Apple tightly controls how it allows resellers to price its products, so it signed off on this move. And while it keeps telling customers that iOS 7 will arrive in the “fall” and tacitly implying that the iPhone 6 will arrive along with it, this fire sale says Walmart expects to be selling the iPhone 6 by this time next month.
The pricing slide is in line with what will happen once the iPhone 6 release date arrives. It’ll be priced at $199 while the iPhone 5 will slide to $99 and the iPhone 4S to free with contract status. So the current fire-sale is an attempt by Walmart to get thirty to forty dollars more for the 5 and 4S now than it’ll be able to get once the iPhone 6 debuts. But making the move now means that it’s planning to receive iPhone 6 inventory shipments almost imminently. One key factor in that scenario is that developers testing iOS 7 have confirmed that it’s already quite far along in terms of completeness and stability in its first version. Apple may consider iOS 7 close enough to being launchable that it’s informing retailers to expect the iPhone 6 introduction within weeks and the iPhone 6 release date within a month.
Those tempted to cash in on Walmart’s iPhone 5 and 4S fire-sale may want to wait just a bit for the smoke to clear, as they may be soon be able to get them even more cheaply if the iPhone 6 release date is as imminent as Walmart seems to think it is.
