Iphone 3gs Advice... need help?

So i purchased an Iphone 3gs a little over 5 months ago and it was working great until a couple days ago. Itunes says it is an unsuitable format and it wants me to restore it to factory settings and itunes wont let me edit anythhing on my iphone until i do................ what exactly does it delete?? like will it delete my at&t info????? Should i do it? PLEASE HELP
