iPhone 3G help please!!! iTunes recognizes my phone (i just bought it today)...

...and i am trying to sync my? ringtones from my iTunes library to my phone. It goes through all the motions, says sync is complete but nothing is getting put onto my phone. Also i noticed that the tool bar where it says library, iphone, apps, and the stuff like that on the right hand side of iTunes is all grey. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. Can anybody please help me out. Thank you so much
