Is it possible to get the iPhone 3G with only voice plan (such as gophone plan for $30/month), and not have the data plan?

That is not permitted. A 3G iPhone must have both voice and data plans. AT&T does not permit the 3G iPhone to be used on a GoPhone account.

You can do that. Only the iPhone requires a data plan along with a voice plan. You can get data only or voice only with other PDA/BlackBerry phones. You cannot get data alone with conventional phones but you can get voice alone with them.

I just noticed that you asked about Verizon in your second message. I may have to revise and extend my remarks after further research.

an at&t rep once told me you could haev an iphone without a voice/data plan theyll probably just rape you on the data cost if you use it without a plan though

Tricky. Tricky. Call ATT and find out if you can, but the other posts are correct, the reason ATT stopped using the iPHONE in early July, is the elimnation of the unlimited data plan.
The iPHONE uses what is called a Server Depndent OS. Which means is requires updated from apple to funtion.Since gophone charges a .01/kb rate it is possible this trendy phone will drain your balance with data charges. Or even worse, you pul this off then the iPHNOE tries to update, then you get tha arrow on top, forcong you to activate through iTUNES. My verdict: Dont do it.

the iphone is the only phone on the market that will make you broke. Basic plan is about $125/mo. Thats why i went with the nokia e71x. Built in wifi and no reqired data plan.
