ipaq problem

I've come across a problem i'd like some help with
i've been given a "broken" PDA to see if i can bring some life to it.
the only way i can get anything on the screen is by plugging it into my laptop where i get no backlight all i have is a HP logo in the middle of the screen. at the top it says USB and at the bottom it says V1.01 and that it . have tried doing a reset by pressing and holding down the Calendar and iTask buttons and the reset button but i get nothing at all. If anyone can send me on the right path to getting this solved i'd be much appreciated.
 
Sounds dead to me, still should get backlight on usb with a dead battery even if it does shut down again almost straight away.
Does the laptop identify it as a windows mobile device when connected?
Is that sequence of buttons you have tried the correct one for a hard reset on that model ipaq ?
