iPad or Laptop or Netbook, which one will be around in 5 years time?

Some of the answers seem to be confusing netbooks with notebooks; I'm assuming you actually mean a small laptop, rather than laptops in general.

IMHO, netbooks will always be around. As I said, they're essentially small laptops, and laptops will never go away. Tablets, on the other hand, seem to rise and fall in popularity. The iPad (and other tablets, such as the Xoom) are big now because of Apple, but I predict in a few years most people will go back to netbooks or laptops. There will always be a place for tablets of course, but for most work you can't beat a proper keyboard and the ability to use it without holding onto it all the time.

iPads would have to become Laptops in order to replace them, and at the moment they are not Laptops.

Think about it; can you install any game or software you want on your iPad? No. Only stuff from the App store.

If one of your friends or work colleagues wants to show you something they have on a USB memory stick, can you plug that into your iPad to display it? No.

If you need to copy something from your iPad onto a disc for it to be played in a DVD player, can you do that? No.

These are all things that Laptops can do, and people use them for. So until iPads can do all of that, they will never replace them.
