iOS and GMail threading

Supposedly threading works on iOS, but I find that it rarely works. SOME threaRAB get properly threaded, others get their own individual emails just like the past.

For example, emails that come in as a subscription notification all get their own. One email with a subject of Monday Morning got put into a thread but another email back and forth with the same person with the subject Work came in separately.

WTF is going on?
 
Bump, this is kind of annoying. All the thread responses from this forum have the same exact subject. In the GMail web app, they are all threaded based on the thread title. In my iOS they are not, they are all separate. And yes, threaded messages is turned ON in the settings...and it works for SOME emails. Like a conversation I've been having with my mother all day has been threaded.
