Intimacy and Sexuality?

Why is intimacy almost always seen as being synonymous with sexual acts in cultures? I've always wondered this because I currently do share a two bedroom apartment with my best friend, but sometimes we fall asleep on the couch and end up cuddling. We're both 18 and straight males, and we don't see it as a big deal since nobody gets sexually aroused. It's just nice to be around another warm body.

One the other hand, our respective parents and some of our mutual friends find this really weird. Hell, our parents actually assume we're sexually active together now. We've talked about how physical affection can be non-sexual, but they just didn't grasp it or argued against it.

It is a generational thing or what? No me gusta. >.<
