I'm Caucasian and have been in a very casual relationship with an African American man for nearly 3 years. Neither of us were in a position to have a "real relationship" but we've been friends and spent time together, but now we're both ready to give this a real chance.
I have 3 brothers. My younger brother is aware of the situation and doesn't have a problem with it. My mother likes him (he was actually her co-worker, that's how we met) so she's fine with it.
My older brothers are where I think my only problem may exist. My mom doesn't know how they'll react. While I wouldn't consider either of them to be racist, they are somewhat conservative and overprotective. Personally I don't think they'll approve of anybody I ever date. I was married for 5 years and they didn't truly ever like my husband. In the past, I dated guys that both of my brothers were friends with and they didn't approve of them either. Its like no matter who the person is, he isn't "good enough" for their little sister. I really think if I told them everything about this guy and at the end mentioned his race, they'd be o.k. with the situation.
So I guess my question is when should I tell them? Should I wait to see if this is actually going to get serious? Or should I get their "approval" before I persue the relationship? Personally I think this will end up being a very serious relationship. We're adults (I'm 29, he's 34) and we've been friends for 3 years and we're both looking for a committment now.
