Internet Help for Verizon?

I have verizon dsl. i only have the 1 mbs plan so i dont exspect it to be super fast but it is extremely show. The fastest i can get it to is about 80-85 kbs. i dont really understand why this is, but i do hear that alot of people have this problem. if you do know whats going on would i need to get like a new router, and if i did should i go out myself and buy a really good one
