Car is a 79 Lincoln Town Car, with the 400. Yesterday it was cruising happily on the highway when suddenly the engine stopped. There was no warning, no sputtering, just sudden silence. It coasted down to about 40 mph, then restarted and ran smooth. Happened again a few minutes later.
My gut said 'ignition', but I wanted to rule out the fuel pump, so I changed that last night. Today, though, I had another shutdown. This time I had to shift into neutral and use the starter to get it to fire again. Then it was fine for the ten minutes home.
It only happens at highway speed and after five or more minutes on the road. Lots of fun having no power at 65, with a semi two lengths behind.
I was thinking of attacking the ignition module next. All my diagnosing and fixing experience is with GM cars, though, not FoMoCo products. I would appreciate any input from those with Ford knowledge.
