read the pillars of the earth by ken follett, set in medieval times in middle England lots of treason ,back stabbing poverty,a real good book and lots to discuss later.beware its a thousand pages long.there is also a follow on called a world without end and that is also a must read.

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.
Google it and look up all the interesting facts surrounding it.

relentless by simon kernick is a fantastic book. It is about a women who recieves a phone call from a friend se has not heard from since school and the friend is being tortured onthe other end of the phone and gives someone her address.

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens is terrific.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand is also a good one.

Andrew's suggestion of 1984 by George Orwell is a good idea too.

Read 1984 by George Orwell, a classic and an easy read, and then you can compare it to the modern world. Perpetual war, big brother, invasion of privacy and all that. Brownie points all round.
