Interest in fashion photography. Help recommend a camera?

I aspire to one day become a world renowned fashion photographer. I do realize that it will take quite sometime, hard work and a bit of luck to get to that position. The photographers that are currently at this level also have some very good, very expensive equipment. I will soon be going to college and plan on studying art and eventually photography with my time there. I'm curious as to what a good camera would be to invest in according to my circumstances? Right now I'm just using my mother's digital camera which isn't bad, but isn't the right one for serious artistic photography. I'm 18 so I don't have wads of cash. Could anyone who knows about this kind of stuff help steer me in the direction of a camera that will suit me well?

digital cameras are NOT investments. The lens on them are. But what cost $1000 today, will cost half that in one year. Get exactly what you can afford and use. You will be replacing it BEFORE you graduate.

If it is DSLR, it is GOOD ENOUGH. It isn't the camera that makes images. It is the photographer. For you school work, ANY 6 MP camera will do.

Again, get an affordable 6MP DSLR. Spend the money on GOOD LENS. You can work part time during school and upgrade the camera. But you will use the lens again and again on different body IF they are good lens.

Also (eventually) you will spend MORE money on lighting equipment. But during school years, you can just use school property.

So surprisingly CAMERA is NOT so important.
