Intelligent, or just cute! Anyone suggest a good fish to me?

I know fishes aren't the most intelligent pet a person can have, but they can be rather cute. Does anyone know active, cool South American fishes? My tank is 45 gallons and rather empty at the moment. Suggestions would be great!
 
How about a blood parrot fish? They are so cute & funny looking, and get pretty big. They are peaceful too. I don't think they are South American though... they're an African crossbreed if I remember correctly.
