Anyone seen this? I recorded it off BBC3 or 4 over Christmas and have just got round to watching it. This is a fantastic film. It's based on the premise that there are people that can attain more and more luck from the people around them by stealing and buying it from others, and trading it amongst themselves. These super lucky people take part in increasingly high stakes, increasingly dangerous games in order to win the right to take on the ultimate 'champion of fate'. Victory means you will have everything you ever wanted. Defeat means...well you'll have to see it. This is classic European cinema, more concerned with atmosphere and beauty than dialogue, back story and motivation. We don't get to know much about these people, save for how they discovered their gift (curse?), but we know that it consumes their lives.

This is a Spanish film from a few years back. I'm pretty sure it will be re-made by Hollywood before too long (and look what they did to Abres los Ojos). Do yourself a favour, see the original version.

I saw this at the pictures when it first came out. I thought it was good, but it didn't have any depth or feeling to it, it was just a clever film with some clever ideas in it. The only time I felt anything was when Max Von Sydow gives his speech at the end about how he came to be the luckiest person in the world, or at least in their little community.

I saw this at the cinema with a relative, as it was recommended in the UGC guide; we both found it pretentious, boring and predictable. There's plenty of texture and the visuals are, indeed, breathtaking at times - however, there's really very little beyond this, and even the best of the cinematography could be considered inferior to similar shots/sequences in other 'classic' european cinema.
