Instead of an assault weapons ban, how about require 40 hours of training?

firearms are inherently dangerous, particularly when mishandled. Hazardous substances are also inherently dangerous. Workers who handle hazardous waste are required to have forty hours of training as per 29 CFR 1910.120 as well as annual refreshers. Why not owners of firearms? I must have had several hundred hours of firearms training over the course of six years and have still had a couple of close calls. Not only would this weed out individuals who shouldn't have firearms, but it would ensure that firearm owners are competent- knowing how to handle, store and maintain weapons.


This question about replacing a ban on "assault" weapons with training to ensure competent firearms owners. I don't want to hear political diatribes against Obama!
 
I think that's a great idea-

I have no problem with people owning assault weapons, but I agree that required training couldn't hurt-
 
Because the NRA will file a lawsuit claiming that requiring training to exercise a constitutional right is illegal, and some activist judge will agree with them.
 
Because the people who are causing the problems with assault weapons aren't getting them legally and probably wouldn't be willing to attend training.
