Installing Palm Desktop again

I appreciate that this might be a duplicate query, but i can't find the relevnat thread.

I've reinstalled Palm Desktop on my laptop, and can't see how to specify that it syncs with outlook, rather than palm desktop.

I think i need to re-install Palm Desktop, but when do i specify that it syncs with outlook and not Palm Desktop?

NB - the version of Palm desktop that i've installed is the latest (4.1.4? from the palmone website, which indicates that it puts the latest outlook conduits in)

Any suggestions?

Ok,

If you click on hotsync icon in the systray and then choose "Custom" it will tell you if your syncing with Outlook or defaulting to Palm Desktop.

If it's Palm Desktop and you want Outlook - you'll have to unistall the Palm Desktop completely and then reinstall after you've rebooted the PC.

The installation process typically will search the registry and find that you've been syncing to the Palm desktop and it assumes you want to reinstall to that configuration and it won't give you the option to sync to Outlook.

This is one reason why I use Pocket Mirror Pro from Chapura, to sync to Outlook.

Cheers - i'll have a look at pocket mirror.

On that subject:

1) does pocket mirror just allow you to sync outlook, without doing the rest of the full sync? As my home pc is my main back up, it'd be useful to be able to do a "pared down" sync at work - esp as i use a BT connection.

2) If i continue to use PAlm desktop, does anyone know what file i need to delete to give me a choice during the instalation process as to whether to use PD or outlook?

The Desktop 4.1.4 version you download from the Palm website does not include the Outlook conduits. Those came with the desktop on the original CD that came with your Palm. Since you didn't say what T series Palm you have, I don't know if it came with the Palm conduits or Pocket Mirror.

Pocket Mirror doesn't have any built in ability to do a limited sync of Outlook alone. You can always accomplish this by just setting every conduit except system and the Outlook conduits to "Do Nothing". If you do this, only Outlook will be synced and your Palm will be backed up.

PMP will allow you to bypass the syncing it controls. That's to say you can set it to "install applications only" and it won't sync anything in Outlook but will run all of the other conduits that have been installed.

Also, PMP will allow you to sync to subfolders in Outlook which can be handy if your familiar with the Palm limit of 15 categories.

I am at work, so I dont have the web site here, but there is a program (GoSync) that allows you to preset your own defined groups of conduits. It saves gobs of time. I use it a lot when I am updating my Word 2 Go, or pictures, etc. I have several groups defined and can just click on a group and hotsync just what I want to and skip the rest. Got it at Pilotgear.com for $8. The icon sits in my tray and I just right click it and choose the group I want to sync, with of course ALL as the default.

Thanks for the responses, i went back and used my T3 oriniginal disc, and have got this sorted, updating the conduits as required.

I'll have a look at the limited sync options, because i have no need to sync anything other than my diary/contacts with my work pc.

Cheers guys.

Ooohh! Cool find DB! I just posted that there's less and less available for Palm . . . this might be a cool add-on to PilotInstall to reduce time. Two questions, please:

1. I manually start HotSync myself; unless I wait 30 seconds after the icon appears in tray, Docs2Go will cause bad crash on the T3 requiring an actual stylus reset. I now start Docs2Go Desktop and THEN hotsync, and there seems to be no more problems. Sooo . . . does GoSync require that HotSync Manager be running?

2. Is Docs2Go among the choosable conduits on the popup list? If it is, I might well fork out for this little bad boy.

Thanks.

No to 1. You just right click the icon in the tray and select one of your preset groups. Any or all of them can exclude D2G as you choose. It does not have to be running, you can do this at any time.

Yes to 2. D2Go is one of the selectable conduits. If I recall all of the ones in HotSync Custom are available. All you have to do is have GoSync refresh and it chooses all of the conduits available. You choose a group, name it (D2Go, Basic, Install, All, None), and it is there to choose any time you desire. Again, I set the default group to ?ALL?, but even that you can define to include or exclude anything you want. It is well worth the $8. I have used it without problem for years. It has saved me tons of time.
