specifically i have a 1999 honda civic sedan ex. im pretty good with electronics so i understand that the type of car doesnt matter too much. i just need help with concepts and principals on installing electronics in my car. for example lets say i want to hook up a new random light. going out from the light is 2 wires respectively positive and ground. how would i go about hooking it up to make it work. where do i hook it up so it gets its power from the batteries, do i have to worry about fuses and if so which ones (under the hood or under the dash), if i need fuses how would i know whats the right ones, how would i go about hooking up the switch.

for any and all help i thank you very much!

The easiest way to do it would be to hook into a light that turns on with your headlights/parking lights then you don't have to worry about a switch, it'll just go on automatically with your lights. Lots of cars have some sort of dash light that illuminates the center console, if you've got that just get to the wires and tap into them. Red to red (or maybe white) and black to black. As long as it's not too much of a draw you don't have to worry about a fuse. You can also run it off of the cigarette lighter. Same game, just tap into the wires. Some lighters work off of the key as an accessory and some don't. That means if yours isn't hooked up as an accessory you have to be sure to turn it off or you'll drain your battery.
