I had remote start installed to my car (Viper 5101) and adding door lock/unlock cost more, and I was cheap about it so I had just remote start installed. I want to be able to use the door lock/unlock buttons as well as the trunk release but I didn't want to pay for it, I just wanted the remote start installed by someone else because that was the scary part I didn't want to deal with. I'd like to finish the job by connecting the wires for door locks, unlocks and trunk release.
So I tried figuring out which wires are the door locks by applying the multimeter to them (black node touching ground, red touching wire). For example, I chose the red/white wire (just an example, I don't remember what color(s) the wire had), and the voltage would jump when I pressed the lock button (on the factory fob, not the after-market remote start fob) and the voltage would jump roughly the same voltage when I pressed the unlock button, too. This occurred with multiple wires. I thought there were designated wires for both. What am I doing wrong here? How do I check which wires are which (without using the wire diagrams. Every diagram I look up it's different for a lot of the wires. I just want to guarantee the wire I'm connecting is the wire I want to connect the remote start wire to).
Those who suggest I go back to the installer to install this or suggest me not doing it myself forfeit the best answer. The best answer will be descriptive in the methods used by veterans in car electronics when confirming what wires do what by using a multimeter (implying the answerer will hopefully be a guru in installing similar systems).
Various info if it will help:
-Vehicle is a 2000 Cadillac Deville
-ONLY REMOTE START is installed, NOT the door lock/unlock buttons, nor the trunk release (which says I need some sort of relay to use it on one wiring diagram I looked up)
Thank you!
