Insomnia due to heart racing & stomach & pain

I have trouble falling asleep and sometimes I don't sleep at all the whole night even though I'm in bed, exhausted, trying to sleep.

Is there anything over the counter I can take?

My main problem is I think nervousness and maybe blood sugar problems, so I want to slow my heart rate down/relax. I have ativan I can take if I want to, I was trying not to take mood meds though so I was told maybe benedril, any recommendations for stomach pain and rapid heart rate? To help me sleep? They need to work really good because sometimes medicine doesn't help either. Thanks soo much you don't know how much this bothers me I literally want to kill myself when it happens.. :(

Have you tried a low tyramine diet? I'm trying it after noticing racing/thudding heart palps at night, for hours, (which are horrible!:() after eating foods like Chinese food (soy sauce is high in tyramine), or aged foods. I have headaches as well, the low tyramine diet is sometimes known as the "headache diet". Anyone taking a type of antidepressant, MAO inhibitors, have to go on the low tyramine diet as well.

Tyramine is an amino acid that controls blood pressure.

It's high in certain fermented cheeses, aged foods, high yeast (like beer), pickled meats or veggies, or soy products.

Thanks I'll look that up now, I haven't tried it but my diet's lots of milk products and sugar (just the sugar in the milk products, like light ice cream)

Hi to both of you, a racing/thumping heart is not to be taken lightly. You both need to have this checked by your Doctors. One thing that comes to mind is an overactive thyroid. Please see your Doctors and all the best.

That's true, you do need to see your doc about this, if you haven't already.

Thyroid problems, hypoglycemia and sleep apnea can cause nighttime palpitations/anxiety, and a bunch of other disorders too I'm sure.

Nighttime panic attacks are the worst. I had them years ago while I was taking prednisone for rheumatoid arthritis. I took ativan for awhile but it just seemed to make me more nervous for some reason, so I switched to children's liquid benedryl. (that way I could control the dosage and avoid the "benedryl hangover" - cotton mouth, dry eyes, headache)

The anti-anxiety Rx drug BuSpar is suppose to be good for generalized anxiety disorder.

What really helped me were relaxation techniques I got from a local support group; deep breathing, meditation, muscle tightening/releasing exercises. I know they sound goofy but they actually work. Pills can only help mask the problem till you can get to the root cause.

Please go see your Dr. There are many things that can cause a rapid heart beat, everything from benign tachycardia to very serious but very treatable conditions. There are medications available that can be used to control the rapid heartbeat that have very few side effects and they are very effective. Some medications can also cause rapid heartbeat - anti-depressants in particular (that I know personally about), and B vitamins can cause it for some people. Benign tachycardia (rapid heartbeat that is not the result of another medical condition) can feel very much like a panic attack, especially once you start worrying about it.;).

Go see your Dr. No matter what it turns out to be you will feel better once you know what it is.
