My son just turned 9 and he recently had a physical for Football. We found out that he has no hearing in his right ear. He had complained before that he couldn't hear out of his ear but we just thought it was wax build-up and just cleaned his ears. He just had a a visit with an Ear, Nose, Throat Specialist and they told us that a hearing aid would not work and wasn't sure that surgery would work either. They said that this has probably been since birth but he had a hearing test done at the hospital after he was born and they said he passed.
He just had a CT Scan to make sure everything is functioning right the other day and we are waiting on the results. My problem is, what are we to do if this doctor is saying that pretty much nothing will help??? My son cannot hear words out of his right ear and he is struggling in school. He has been struggling for the past 4 years. Should I get a second opinion?? Is there another kind of doctor I should talk to???

What a shame...

I would definitely seek more opinions, technology is changing everyday. Do you have a sound diagnosis yet? That is the first step, and then you research all you can about it before making decision. We are here to help...

You could take him to an audiologist. If he's had this problem since he was a baby, I doubt that much can be done at this point other than make sure he's seated at the front of the classroom and that his teachers are aware of the deafness. Perhaps if there is no cure, he could learn to read lips and that would help supplement what he does hear.
