Indoor plant/tree; weird dirt-like brown spots on leaves?

My friend gave it to me as a gift a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, she took off the tag to hide the price, so I have no idea what kind of plant it is. My mom says she thinks it's a ficus. Anyways, it's been doing well and has grown lots. And today when I was checking on it, i was disturbed to find these weird brown spots on the leaves. At first I thought it was dirt or something, because it looked like dirt, and when I touched them, they came off like dirt. However, as I noticed more and more leaves had these weird spots, I noticed a few of the branches on my poor tree also had the spots; and while dirt-spots on leaves are plausible, no way it's all dirt clinging to the branches also.

What's wrong with my plant? :(

oh and btw, I looked up 'san jose scale' but these spots look nothing like those. just think of tiny little dirt clumps clinging to the underside of the leaves, and that's exactly what this looks like.
