Increasing Power in Honda CR-V?

I am buying a 1997 Honda CR-V. Just a little background info...it was auctioned off by a race team along with all its other inventory. When you have a bunch of guys standing around with the cash to buy their fancy Corvette pace cars and track trucks, they don't care about little econo SUV's.... I don't fall into that category.

It's a 97, 95,000 miles, completely stock... Excellent shape, garage kept entire life, regular maintence done. I have read numberous reviews that state lack of power as the one issue...

My question:

What are the economical ways to increase HP in a little 4cyl? I paid less than $2k for a 5500 car... getting something more powerful isn't an option. I'd like to spend less than $1000, and get at least another 10-15 horses....

Ideas?
BTW - I'm not looking to make it "fast." I just want it to accelerate a bit more comfortably.
 
it has a b20 engine so you could put on a dc header from the 99 si coupe or acura integra and it would fit...it would give you more horse power and better acceleration...also increase your exhuast piping to help it flow out better....you could even add an intake....
 
a b16a2 head.. 500.
lsvtec kit. 150.
chipped ecu. 150.

another 40ish horse right there.

search for lsvtec... try honda-tech.com. an lsvtec crv would be sick.

edit.. it still wouldnt be fast. if you dont want to do that a simple header/exhaust/intake is pretty much your only option.

OR... swap in a b16 trans for about 500.. the shorter gears will accelerate faster..
