Has anybody had an incisional hernia before? If you have, have you had surgery for it yet and how was the recovery? What are the risks of this surgery? My mom just told me she had an incisional hernia and I am worried because she just had a major intestinal surgery back in Novemeber! I just want to know if anybody knows anything about the recovery and risks of this surgical procedure!? Thank you!

Hello, I am easydoesit's wife. I am home recovering from open incisional hernia surgery. I had my surgery last Monday, Feb 16th. As with any type of surgery, there is always risk. Hernia surgery is very common. My hernia was located in the incision site where 2 years ago, I had to have my right kidney removed. Previous to that about 20 years ago I had gallbladder surgery. When they did my kidney surgery, they went back into that scar and when they did my hernia surgery once again they went back into the same scar. My surgeon first told me I would only stay one night in the hospital. However, I stayed 5 days and 4 nights. I was running a low grade temperature and he would not release me until the fever was gone. It is a painful surgery. Your mother will need help around the house because she will be moving very slow, can't bend over and it is very hard to get up from a prone posiiton. I have not been in much pain since I have been home..only need something for pain every now and then. I have an office job and I plan to go back to work in 2 weeks. Hope your mother does well. Just be there for her. Our daughter has been an angel helping me through this.

I had a series of intestinal surgeries in 2000, which resulted in a large hernia. Because I had undergone several surgeries over the course of the year and because there was no pressing medical reason, initially the doctors did not want to do anything about it.

Long story short, it did not get repaired until 2006 when surgery was necessary for other reasons.

To your questions, finally . . . there is risk with any surgery. Since incisional hernias are generally close to the surface, there is relatively less risk. Recovery would depend a little on the location and size of the hernia. IN GENERAL, one could probably resume most activities within a couple of weeks (lifting and strenuous activities would probably be deferred longer than that).

I had my incisional hernia repair 3 weeks ago and I am still pretty sore. The first week I needed help with everything (getting out of bed, showering, toilet) I have been on Percocet, which I only take when I really need it these days. I have not gone back to work, since my job is very physical, not sure if I can even go back to it at this point. My surgeon told me it will take 12 weeks for my body to fully recover, not sure if that is cause my hernia was so large or the fact that I had a tubal ligation done just 6 weeks prior. Bottom line, yes it will be painful and it is a long recovery process...I am still waiting for the good part!
