In your opinion what makes someone an alcoholic?

I know there are official definitions for what qualifies someone as an alcoholic but that is not what I am asking about. I want to know what, in your mind, makes someone an alcoholic rather than someone who drinks a bit more than average.

As someone who is sometimes concerned with their relationship with alcohol I am curious what others think.
