In this situation, talk to him alone or not?

I met this guy in a language class. He had asked to share text. On same day, we partnered for this script and recited in front of class. Some of guys in the room laughed >:(

The very next class, he sat at the very back. I thought he doesnt want to be partners anymore...so i partnered with a girl.
Since then, still partners with the girl. Completely avoided eye contact with guy...who sits by himself a lot.

Few weeks ago, saw him on campus street. When I passed him, i took a peak at him...he had turned his head to his right (looking away).

Few days ago, prof was teaching us a "greeting" lesson and the guy was sitting near so prof asked us some questions related to the lesson.

Teacher to him: "Do you know her?"
Guy - "yes" [being polite?]
Teacher to me: "Do you know him?"
Me - "yes"
Teacher to me: "is he your friend?"
Me: "he is my classmate"
Teacher to me: "mmm i guess he is not your friend then"
Then the immature guys in the class laughed D:<

I cant believe the teacher...way to go to make me feel bad. I had said "classmate" because we barely talked, other guys might laugh, and I dont know how he feels about me.

I am thinking about saying this to him:
"Hey, how are you. About last class, the teacher had asked us questions right? I just want you to know I said "classmate" because I didnt know if you saw me as a friend and also because there were immature guys in class. Are you ok? -smile-"

Any changes necessary?
And should I talk to him alone or where there is a group of people (but they might laugh or something)?

Thank you :)
