In the NFL, during a field goal, does the ball have to be kicked 8 yards from...

...behind the line of scrimmage? Or can it be further? For instance, if a team is on the 10 yard line, and this field goal is for the win with only a few seconds left, why have the placeholder line up on the 18 yard line (which would make it a 28 yard field goal), why not line up 10-12 yards back to make sure it doesn't get blocked, and that would only make it a 30-32 yard field goal anyways, but it would be block-proof.

So I'm wondering, do you have to line up 8 yards back from the line, or can you do as much as you want? BTW to people who aren't familiar, if you miss the field goal, the other team gets the ball from where you kicked it, not from where the line of scrimmage was, so I could see this as a reason why you wouldn't line up too far back, but 2-3 yards more to make it block proof? Come on.
