In the market for new phone

So let me tell you about my current setup:

I have Verizon coverage with a Motorola E815. My phone number is on my dad's account, so my name is basically on nothing dealing with Verizon. I also have no text message packages or any other packages hooked onto my phone number. I also split I think somewhere around 700 minutes between my dad and I. Because of this setup, I only have to pay $15 a month for a phone bill.

So for a new phone, I was looking at the Helio Ocean or some HTC model to use on Verizon's network(I haven't really picked one yet because I haven't looked too hard at those).

With the Ocean, I read Gizmodo's recent feature-by-feature article covering the new phone, and what I read pleased me with no huge problems. I like the design of it and I like from the pictures/videos I've seen the interface/menu of the phone. Everything I've read/seen about the Ocean gets me really excited. It doesn't really bother me that it doesn't have wi-fi, that its battery life isn't too terribly good, or that its keyboard is kinda cramped, but not horribly cramped.

With HTC, I've heard nothing but good things about them. So If someone could recommend an HTC that has a full qwerty keyboard,wi-fi,a nice screen, and good battery life that would be awesome.

So here are some questions I have about the process of switching my phone number from Verizon to Helio:

1. Would I just half to call up say Verizon customer support and tell them I want to drop my account with them but I want to keep my number and take it with me? Or would I have problems since my name isn't on anything that deals with Verizon?
2. If it was as easy as that, could I use the excuse of them(Verizon) changing their text-message rates to cancel my account without and ETFs?
3. If I signed up with Helio, where would be the best place to get the phone? Gamestop? Because I've seen that name a lot from just browsing a little through the forums.
4. Say I didn't go with Helio and I stayed with Verizon but wanted a new phone. What would be a good HTC model to go with and since I'm still on a 2-year contract, could I use the text-message rate charge change excuse to sign up again with a new phone?

I'm sure I'll come up with some more questions, so I'll just edit this post with them instead of replying to this thread with the new question(s).

Thanks guys/gals for helping me out.
