hawks and doves - no idea what this is
patricians and plebeians - i want to say it is this.

Patricians and plebeians just like you said although patricians did all the political fighting amongst each other. For example, Sulla supported the patrician senate while Marius supported the plebeian cause during their rivalry for control of the republic.
