...used as electrolyte? In sealed environments that need to generate oxygen, such as submarines or space stations, i have read that electrolysis is used to generate the necessary oxygen. But i have also read that some electrolytes (such as common salt, NaCl) generate toxic chlorine gas or other harmful gasses instead of pure oxygen. What do such closed systems use as electrolyte to guarantee oxygen purity, or how do they ensure that the generated gas is breathable?
 
No electrolyte is required just water. The hydrogen is removed through a hydrogen permeable membrane (oxygen can't pass thru)
