In Rome Total War, can you fight "isolated battles" w/o having to play the

game at a strategic level? If yes, what units are available for your selection? All of them? What about if you have the Barbarian and Alexander Expansions, is your inventory of units CUMULATIVE? (you get to pick from all 3), or INDIVIDUAL (you get to pick the units only from the game you're currently playing).
