In NYS, after a youthful adjudication misdemeanor, are records sealed and

hidden from background checks? My friend who is 18 years recently got his misdemeanor conviction converted to youthful offender. Basically, they charged him with theft and disorderly conduct and the disorderly conduct charge was dropped but he was found youthful offender and they gave him 3 years of probation which was cut down to 1/1/2 years and now that term is over. He is concerned that it is going to show up on a background check when applying for a job, but I think youthful offender in nys is sealed. Am I correct or will this actually show up on a backgroudn check
