In New York, am I allowed to keep a bike in my apartment?

First of all, I live in a 3 floor family house, and I live on the 1st. The floor is carpeted.

Second - The landlord wants his payment in cash - which means no receipt. And when he does come to pick up his monthly rent, he notices that there is a bike in my apartment, and starts to bitch about it, telling me to either leave it outside on the first floor or keep a rug under it so that the oh so EXPENSIVE carpet does not get ruined or dirty. I agreed that I will put a rug under it just to make him go away.

The second time he came to pick up his rent, I still didn't do anything about it, but only because I've thought about it.. why should I have to leave MY bike outside? Afterall, I'M the one paying the rent, right? I walk in here with shoes, so what's the difference? And I'm sure that it isn't illegal to keep a BIKE in the apartment that I pay rent for monthly..

Right??? Someone please help.
 
if it doesnt say anything about it in the lease, then you dont have to do it. also, if the lease doesnt say anything about paying in cash, then give that fool a money order so you have a receipt!
 
The issue is not governed by any law. No law prohibits you from entering into a lease that does not allow bikes in apartments. The question is first whether you have done so. For that, read the lease including any provisions for making new rules. If you have no lease then you are month-to-month and the conditions can be changed or the lease terminated upon proper notice of one calendar month.
