In NBA 2K11, in My Player mode, what happens if you don't make the team?

I was drafted to the Heat in My Player mode and I am a point guard. Since Miami is so competitive I didn't make the team after the Summer Circuit. I play for the Portland, Maine Red Claws in the D-League. Will I get pulled up to the NBA after a while or should I create a new My Player and abandon this one?
