In marching band, is it a good idea to practice the music before camp?

This might seem like a stupid question, but I really want to know because sometimes you can practice the music wrong and then be used to playing it like that and then when camp comes, you're all confused because that's not how you know how to play it. Also, if I practice too much, I can easily get burnt out on my music, as I play trumpet and it makes my mouth sore when I practice for 4 hours at a time, lol. So, I'm just curious. Thanks. (:

I would say it never is a bad idea to practice before camp. Especially as a trumpet player it will allow you to build endurance in your embouchure, so you don't blow out in rehearsal or in the middle of the show.

I would, however, suggest that you not practice 4 hours at a time. That would be prime example of over practice. Try and have shorter practice sessions of 30 minutes to an hour, so that way you don't burn yourself out.

Also, if you are worried about practicing the music wrong try and email your band director to see if he can send you a recording or midi file of the show. That way you can listen to it and pick out your part to make sure your playing it right.

I hope this helps.

YES you need to practice. In my school you are required to MEMORIZE your music before camp so you get the marching routine down. So practice! at least become well enough acquainted with your music that you can play it without mistake. practice with friends in marching band so you all play the same part. ask your band director what you should do as well, they might have different requirements from mine. good luck! marching band rocks!

Yes, you must practice before camp. Camp is usually putting the music to the steps...and if you don't know the music...you get my point. : ) Hope that helps!

i don't play music, mostly because i don't have hands... but i would say that practice can't hurt,,,

i know that probably doesn't help, but good luck at band camp,
don't do what they did in that movie... :P
