In Late Antiquity, Was Paganism Starting To Approach Monotheism?

I ask because I know the philosophers of Greece and Rome had a different conception then did other folk. Was there a move to a "High God", while not denying the existence of other deities? Was there religious syncretism going on as well, and if so, if it had not been supressed do you think a form of Pagan monotheism would exist today? What about the Neo-Platonists?

I can't help but think of that one Pharaoh, and his monotheistic worship of Aton.

It didn't last, but I think it's along these lines.
