In Fairfax, VA, what is a standard court sentence for Assault and Battery (1st offense)?

My spouse received a warrant for his arrest and was released on $1000 bond for a 1st offense charge of Assault and Battery (Class 1 misdemeanor). His court date is in October and he has no attorney. What is the likely sentence? Is it possible a court-appointed attorney might be helpful for him or should he find a way to get money for a paid attorney? This is in Fairfax County, Virginia.
 
He should get an attorney. Depending on the severity of the situation (how much the other person was hurt) he could just get a first offender disposition. However, you need to get to the prosecutor- you can only do that if you have an attorney- they won't talk to you without one. An attorney there will charge you $800-$1500 depending on the situation. Anything more than that is too much.
