In Corel Photo Paint 12...?

Alright, I've been having a consistent problem with the brush strokes. I can't do anything! For some reason, on the tab that's supposed to have a bunch of options for brush strokes, it says "Custom Art Brush" and it won't let my paint anything to the background. I can't figure out how to get it back. Help :\
