In cooking what is a cup??? (grams and ounces)?

I am looking for recipes for muffins online and it appears that american recipes use cups instead of normal grams and oz's like we would in the uk.
Could someone please help me out do you know what the equivalent to one cup is in either grams or ounces im not fussed as to which.
