In Cicada in Winter, why does Kusaka have long red hair in war time?

From what I gather, wigs in historical Japan were only worn by actors and geisha. It seems like the battlefield would be a bad place for one. I figured he had his hair cut before going to England to fit in better with the English. But this one hair change really escapes me! Did samurai ever wear wigs?
