In California, how would a multiple subjects teacher transition to special education?

Is there anyone who has done this? I've been out of the classroom for 3 years and would like to return to teaching. I've always preferred working in special programs, but do not have my Sped credential. Can I teach a resource or special day class while working on the credential?
