in Apple ipod, can games be downloaded without creditcard.?

I hv apple ipod 8gb,touch creen, I want to download games and songs that are available free on itunes.But it says, first You need apple id.Now while creating id in itunes, they ask for credit card number.And I dnt hv it. so can't I dwnld without card? or is thr any other way to dwnld games for free.
 
I managed to skip credit card details. Are you doing thus from your pc or iPod ? I'm sure I done my account from iPod good luck ;)
